Research in applied sport psychology supports that psychological skill acquisition follows similar principles to physical training: a single session can create awareness and initiate behavioural change, but deliberate, spaced repetition is needed for mastery (Weinberg & Gould, 2019; Birrer & Morgan, 2010). However, even short, targeted interventions have been shown to produce meaningful shifts in self-regulation, confidence, and attention control when delivered correctly (Lindsay et al., 2007; Vealey, 2007).

The Key Lies In Task Specificity.

Simple techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing or cue word repetition can be introduced and practiced in as little as 30–45 minutes (Kudlackova et al., 2013).

 

Moderate complexity skills like imagery scripts or pre-performance routines typically require 60–90 minutes to educate, tailor, and rehearse effectively (Cumming & Ramsey, 2009).

 

Complex mindset interventions, such as managing pressure under competition conditions or refining recovery focus routines, often require multiple sessions to be personalised and integrated (Gardner & Moore, 2006).
